About Shuya Okino ( KYOTO JAZZ MASSIVE / KYOTO JAZZ SEXTET )
Shuya Okino is a music producer, DJ, selector, composer, author, radio personality, and owner of the iconic Tokyo club The Room.
In 2000, Kyoto Jazz Massive’s release “ECLIPSE” topped the BBC Radio ZUBB chart for three consecutive weeks. As an internationally recognized artist, he has performed in over 140 cities across 40 countries.
In 2006, he released his first solo album “United Legends”. In 2009, he received the Good Design Award for music direction at United Cinema Toyosu, designed by Intentionalies.
In 2015, he launched the jazz project Kyoto Jazz Sextet, releasing the debut album “MISSION” through the legendary Blue Note label. In June 2017, they released their second album “UNITY” and performed at Fuji Rock Festival’s Field of Heaven stage. In July 2018, Okino performed at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival as a DJ.
In 2021, Kyoto Jazz Massive released their long-awaited second album “Message From A New Dawn” after a 19-year hiatus. In 2022, they released their third album “SUCCESSION”, featuring jazz legend Takeo Moriyama, and returned to Fuji Rock Festival after five years.
Since 2022, they have toured Europe under the name Kyoto Jazz Massive with Echoes Of A New Dawn Orchestra.
In 2024, Kyoto Jazz Massive celebrates their 30th anniversary with the release of the EP “KJM EOANDO” in June, which reached No.1 on the iTunes Dance Album chart. The track “Impulsive Procession” also reached No.1 on the Traxsource Broken Beat/Nu-Jazz chart. A compilation album “KJM COVERS” is scheduled for release in December.
In July 2025, Kyoto Jazz Sextet will release their new single “DOSOJIN NO UTA”.
Okino is the author of several books, including “DJ Selection Techniques”, “Introduction to Club Jazz”, and his autobiography “Profession: DJ, 25 Years”. He currently hosts Tokyo Crossover Radio on InterFM (Fridays at 10:00 PM) and curates the program “Shuya Okino presents Music in The Room” on USEN’s I-12 channel.
